Berkovic: Redknapp

articlemain

Eyal Berkovic believes Harry Redknapp should lead England at the Euros and can take them all the way in the finals.

Berkovic played under Redknapp at West Ham for two seasons at the end of the nineties and was reunited with him at Portsmouth before returning to Israel.

He said: "Harry has tremendous personal intuition and that never-say-die English fighting spirit. Most importantly, the players love him and want to go out and win for him."

The former Israeli international rejects suggestions that Redknapp should pass up the opportunity to manage England as he has the opportunity to continue building Spurs into a Premier League super-power.

"The job of national team manager always takes precedence over a club," he said. "It is an honour that cannot be refused."

Whilst at West Ham, Berkovic told Israeli reporters of his surprise at the lack of focus on tactics played a part in Redknapp's preparation, but he does not believe this will stop him being a success for the national team.

"Harry will give them motivation and determination," Berkovic said. "He'll have the best assistants around him to discuss the tactical side of the game."

● Zambia's victory in the African Cup of Nations could provide a profitable boost for Maccabi Tel Aviv. The Ligat Ha'Al side will receive 20 per cent of any future transfer of Emmanuel Mayuka who scored three goals and converted a penalty in the dramatic shootout win over Ivory Coast in the final. Mayuka, 21, made 41 appearances in Israel before moving to BSC Young Boys for $1.7 million. The Swiss club now value Mayuka at $7m.
