Benayoun eyes Israel comeback

articlemain

Yossi Benayoun is expected to return to the Israel squad for next week’s friendly international against Belarus at Jerusalem’s Teddy Stadium.

The Israeli captain was dropped by manager Eli Guttman for the back-to-back World Cup qualifying victories over Luxembourg last month because he was not playing first-team football. But he has since established himself in the West Ham starting line-up.

Having played the full 90 minutes in last weekend’s draw against league champions Manchester City, Benayoun has made it clear he is prepared to return. “If I’m picked, I won’t say no,” the midfielder said.

It remains unclear whether Itay Shechter will also be recalled. He has been warming Swansea’s bench for most of the season, but came on for the last 10 minutes and set up the late equaliser against Chelsea last week.
