Maccabi Haifa look set to appoint Ran Ben Shimon as their new manager following the departure of Reuven Atar.

Atar was sacked nine games into the season after Haifa endured its worst start for 40 years with just one victory.

Haifa has won the Ligat Ha’Al title seven times since 2000, but are currently positioned in the relegation zone in the 14-team Ligat Ha’Al.

Club president Jacob Shahar said: "This was my most difficult decision in the 20 years that I have owned the club. I love Reuven and value him as a coach and player."

Ben Shimon, who manages AEK Larnaca, guided minnows Kiryat Shmona to the Israeli Premier Division title last season. The former Haifa player remains an popular figure on the terraces at the Kiryat Eliezer stadium.
