Nicknamed Big Bird, Lederman is one of the most celebrated figures on the circuit following 47 years of competitive cricket.

He described his “proudest moment” as being leading wicket taker in the Middlesex County League the season North Middlesex won the league, “under the inspired captaincy of Steve Williams”.

Lederman also played and managed at the Maccabiah Games in Israel. He said: “Well, I guess it had to come to an end at some point — 47 seasons of adult cricket and I have now realised that the pain vs gain barometer has swung too far in the wrong direction.

“During this time, I missed maybe a dozen matches through injury. I have been very fortunate indeed. I have played with and against some truly wonderful cricketers and people. Delighted to have played in several parts of the world, and represented my district, county and country at different levels.

“If anyone needs some extra-long pads or a grotty pair of batting inners, just let me know.”

Former team-mate Benedict Bermange, now the chief statistician at Sky Sports Cricket, shared a Facebook tribute, led by former England captain Nasser Hussain and fellow commentator David Lloyd.

* One-day specialist Michael Klinger fired Gloucester to the top of the T20 Vitality Blast south group after smashing 77 runs off just 50 balls in the 30-run win over Glamorgan. The Australian right-hander saw his team home, finishing unbeaten. He hit seven boundaries and three sixes.

* If you’re looking for some cricket to watch on Sunday, London Maccabi Vale travel to Hertford in their latest match in the Chess Valley League first division, while Belmont & Edgware visit Crouch End.

* South Manchester Sports FC 1st XI have joined the Chesman League second division for season 2018/19. South 2nd will remain in the MJSL.
