Journeyman Josh something of a surprise package

Oakwood joint-manager Dan Kristall described Player of the Year Josh Bharier as “a shining light” after the much-travelled striker was rewarded for a stellar season with the accolade of best player in the Maccabi League.

It’s quite bizarre that only a couple of the individual award winners came from teams who won any of the league or cup competitions, and some would say the choice of Bharier was something of a surprise package. That said, no-one can argue with the fact he scored 20 goals in his first full season in the top division, so he deserves all the plaudits he gets.

* Nick Blackman is expected to leave Derby County following the conclusion of a season-long loan spell at Sporting Gijon in Spain. In a message to Gijon fans, the 29-year-old striker tweeted: “Thank you for making me feel welcome in your great city and at your club. Your passion for Gijon is incredible. “I will remember you fondly. It is now time for me to move on to a new challenge. Thanks also to my team-mates and the staff.”  Blackman cost Derby around £3m in 2016, but has not played for the club in two years.

* Cletus Seldin recorded an 11th round stoppage against former six-time world champion Zab Judah in a light-welterweight fight in New York. Judah was released from hospital after sustaining injuries against fellow American Seldin, who is billed as ‘the Hebrew Hammer’. Judah, 41, entered the ring for the first time in 17 months, but he reportedly suffered a bleed on the brain against a boxer nine years his junior. Judah was said to be “awake” and “making progress” by fight promoters Star Boxing.

Judah, who now has a record of 44 wins and 10 defeats, won his first world title at super-lightweight in 2000 and unified the welterweight division in 2005.

* Belmont & Edgware will be looking to register their first victory in the Chess Valley League when they travel to Stanmore Warriors on Sunday. Jonny Eintracht claimed his second four-wicket haul of the season in the team’s 54-run defeat in the Division Five opener against Bharat Olympians before Shavuot, in a game in which they conceded 50 extras. The Australian all-rounder also impressed with the bat, top-scoring with 35 in an innings that ended on 158.

* An Arsenal pro-celebrity team will take on Chai Kickers for the L’Chaim Cup in a charity football match at Queen’s School in Bushey at 1pm this Sunday. All funds raised will go to Chai in Schools, which supports children with parents or family members who have had or have cancer. Admission is £3 for U13s and £5 for adults.
