Barack Obama received a call this week from disgruntled Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

The Jewish-American tycoon, 29, phoned the US president to complain about excessive governmental surveillance on the social media site, which has 1.2 billion users across the globe.

“I’ve called President Obama to express my frustration over the damage the government is creating for all our future,” Mr Zuckerberg wrote on his own Facebook page on Thursday.

“Unfortunately, it seems like it will take a very long time for full reform.

“When our engineers work tirelessly to improve security, we imagine we're protecting you against criminals, not our own government.

“They need to be much more transparent about what they’re doing, or otherwise people will believe the worst”.

A White House spokesman confirmed that President Obama and Mr Zuckerberg spoke “about recent reports in the press about alleged activities by the US intelligence community”.
