Jewish actress Winona Ryder has revealed that Mel Gibson once told her an antisemitic joke about the Holocaust.

However the star said no one believed her when she suggested Mr Gibson was prejudiced against Jews.

After the actor was arrested for drunk driving in 2006 Mr Gibson reportedly said: "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world".

He was caught on tape allegedly telling the Jewish police officer who arrested him: “F***king Jews… Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.”

Ms Ryder, told GQ magazine that the incident happened 15 years ago at a Hollywood party.

She said: “He was really drunk. Somehow it came up that I was Jewish. He said something about 'oven dodgers', but I didn't get it.

    “I'd never heard that before.”

The star said she was with a gay friend at the time and that Mr Gibson had made a “really horrible joke” at his expense.

She added: “It was just this weird, weird moment. And I was like, 'He's antisemitic and he's homophobic’. No one believed me.”

Ms Ryder, who stars alongside Jewish actresses Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis in the upcoming film Black Swan, is the daughter of a Jewish author and publisher called Michael Horowitz

As a teenager she appeared in the Tim Burton black comedy Beetlejuice. She also starred in the film adaptation of Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible and was Oscar-nominated for both The Age of Innocence and Little Women.
