A prestigious French university has expelled a student for making antisemitic remarks on social media.

Kuwaiti Amira Jumaa is the first student to be expelled from Sciences Po since the institution was founded in 1872.

The 20-year-old was carrying out an internship at the French embassy in New York as part of her studies when the posts she made on Facebook during an online debate with an Israeli student came to light.

She wrote to the Israeli: “You don’t belong anywhere in this world — that’s why you guys are scum and rats and discriminated against wherever you are. Do not blame it on the poor Palestinians.”

In response to being accused of racism, Ms Jumaa wrote: “First of all you dispersed rat, I am not an immigrant from France. I am from Kuwait so my country can buy you and your parents and put you in ovens.”

The comments were published by a website called TheInglouriousBasterds, which seeks to expose online antisemitism. Ms Jumaa was then fired from her internship and suspended from the university.

The later decision on her expulsion was made in December by a disciplinary committee of professors and students, but was announced only on a piece of paper posted on a wall in one of the school buildings. Weekly French newspaper Nouvel Observateur discovered the paper and published the story on Tuesday.
