Trump campaign accused of antisemitic stereotyping in final campaign ad

“Trump’s casual use of anti-Semitic memes and stereotypes in this campaign has been shocking and dangerous"

Donald Trump’s final campaign ad before the general election has been criticised by Jewish groups for its alleged antisemitic overtones.

The video contains phrases such as “the Establishment has trillions of Dollars at stake in this election”, and “those who control the levers of power in Washington”. At the same time, it shows footage of two prominent American Jews; George Soros, a prominent Billionaire backer of Liberal causes, and Janet Yellen, Chair of the US Federal Reserve.

Later in the video, Trump says “it’s a global power structure that is responsible for the economic decisions that have robbed our working class, stripped our country of its wealth, and put that money into the pockets of a handful of large corporations and political entities.” Lloyd Blankfein, the Jewish CEO of Goldman Sachs, is one of those pictured at the same time.

In a statement from the Anti-Defamation League, Jonathan Greenblatt, the organisation’s CEO, said:

Meanwhile, the National Jewish Democratic Council said:

“Trump’s casual use of anti-Semitic memes and stereotypes in this campaign has been shocking and dangerous.

“What has becoming increasingly clear as the election is coming to a close, especially with this latest ad, is that Trump has made a strategic choice to continue employing themes long used by anti-Semites.”

The Trump campaign hit back on Sunday, with Jason Greenblatt, Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer of the Trump Organisation and co-chair of Mr Trump’s Israel Advisory Committee, calling the accusations “completely false and uncalled for.”

“Mr Trump’s message and all of the behaviour that I have witnessed over the two decades that I have known him have consistently been pro-Jewish and pro-Israel and accusations otherwise are completely off-base”, he said.

David Friedman, another prominent Jewish Trump backer, went further, attacking Mr Soros in a statement made to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency:

“Mr. Soros, whose name is not recognizably Jewish and who has done nothing to positively identify with the Jewish people, has been behind countless efforts to vilify the State of Israel and encourage punitive sanctions against the Jewish State”, he said.

“Only the Trump campaign has had the courage to call out Mr. Soros and his allies for their disgraceful behaviour.”
