Son of Saul Shoah film nominated for an Oscar

Holocaust film Son of Saul has been nominated for an Academy Award, it was announced on Thursday.

The Hungarian production, which has already won a Golden Globe and a Grand Prix honour from Cannes during the awards season.

It was first shown in Britain at the UK Jewish Film Festival in November.

Director Laszlo Nemes’ nuanced portrayal of a concentration camp prisoner forced to burn bodies of other Jews will face competition from Colombia, Denmark, France, and Jordan for the Best Foreign Language Film prize.

The Oscar winner will be revealed on February 28 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, when Jewish director Steven Spielberg will also find out whether his film Bridge of Spies triumphs in one of the six categories it has been nominated in.

The historical thriller, which stars Academy Award winner Tom Hanks, received a Best Picture nomination, with Mark Rylance nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

The Cold War film was also nominated for the Original Score, Production Design, Original Screenplay and Sound Mixing categories.
