A Palestinian man is in a critical condition after being shot while attempting to stab an Israeli border police officer in the West Bank.

Wearing what appeared to be a suicide vest, the man attacked border police between Ramallah and the settlement of Beit El.

A video posted online showed the border police officers shooting him three times before he fell to the ground.

Photographs from the scene showed a small blade in the man's right hand.

A medical source told the AFP news agency that the assailant was a 24-year-old from Hebron in the southern West Bank. He was reportedly taken to hospital by Palestinian medics.

The soldier sustained moderate injuries, Haaretz reported.

It came as Israeli troops shot and wounded more than 40 Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank on Friday, as violent protests against Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital entered a second week.
