Modigliani painting fetches £113 million in New York auction

articlemain

A painting by Jewish artist Amedeo Modigliani has sold for $170.4 million (£113 million), the second-highest price at auction for any artwork.

Reclining Nude was sold by Christies in New York on Monday night to an unnamed Chinese collector thought to be billionaire investor Liu Yiqian.

Pablo Picasso’s painting Women of Algiers (Version O) holds the record for the highest sum ever paid for an artwork at auction. It sold for $179.4m at Christie’s in May.

The previous record sum for a Modigliani was $71m.

Modigliani was born into a Sephardi family in Livorno, Italy in 1884.

He is known for his portraits and nudes, and was associated with the Jewish school of artists in Paris in the early years of the 20th century.

Reclining Nude, one of his best known works, was first exhibited in the French capital in 1917.

A new record was also set for the sale of a work by Jewish pop artist Roy Lichtenstein. His 1964 painting Nurse fetched $95.4m at the auction.
