John Galliano stripped of French government award

Former Dior fashion designer John Galliano was stripped of his Legion of Honour award by the French government to “preserve the legitimacy” of the prize, according to Richard Prasquier, the President of Crif, the umbrella body representing the French Jewish organisations.

French President François Hollande signed a decree ordering that Galliano be removed from the Legion of Honour list following a court decision in September 2011, which found the fashion designer guilty of directing antisemitic abuse at a couple in a Paris bar.

Stripping a person of the Legion of Honour award is a highly unusual move and puts Galliano in grisly company. Maurice Papon, convicted in 1998 for Holocaust crimes, kept wearing the decoration until his death after he was ordered to stop doing so by the Council of the Legion.

According to a spokesperson for the Legion of Honour, Galliano was informed that he was due to be stripped of the award and was given three months to defend himself.
