The mutilated body of a 25-year-old Israeli man has been found in Kiev by picnickers.

Arie Amigud Leibovich (also known as Stanislav Mizernov) disappeared three weeks ago after hosting a party with his flatmate.

Police have arrested a computer technician who has confessed to the murder and even reconstructed it for them.

According to the spokeswoman of the Golosiyuvsky district police force, Yulia Mustash, Mr Leibovitch arrived at the alleged murderer's flat on the morning of April 13 after the two spent all night drinking together. Mr Leibovitch was killed there and his body was dismembered with a kitchen knife.

Later, the alleged murderer returned to Mr Leibovitch's flat, pretending to be looking for Mr Leibovitch. When he returned home again, he put the body parts into plastic bags and hid them in a local park, covered in leaves, in at least six separate sorties.

"He could not explain his motives, other than to say that he was drunk and did not know what he was doing," said Ms Mustash. "He told us calmly how he separated the head and arms from the body. Without batting an eyelid he said that when he saw there was no pulse, he decided to cut up the body. He did not seem to have any regrets."

Should he be found sane, he is expected to be sentenced to at least 15 years in jail.

Ms Mustash added that he apparently was not motivated by antisemitism.

The local Jewish community, however, is not convinced. "Arie had the face of a Jew, he was proud of his Judaism, he spoke fluent Hebrew and studied in a yeshivah," said Chabad's Rabbi Yaakov Zilberman. "The Jewish community feels pain, loss and also fear."

Rabbi Zilberman is bringing Mr Leibovitch's Israeli family to the Ukraine, but since Mr Leibovitch was a foreign citizen, his body will only be released after his relatives make a request through the Israeli or Russian embassy in Kiev.
