Israeli autism drama to get the Homeland treatment

An Israeli drama series about an autistic child and his family could be the latest Hebrew-to-English crossover hit.

The rights to the Yellow Peppers series have been bought by the US Lions Gate studio, Ha’aretz reported.

The series, which was first shown in December 2010, is set in the desert and revolves around a farming family and the challenges of life in a remote setting. It has had record high viewing figures in Israel and a second series is currently in production.

Its Israeli creator, Keren Margalit, is now working on an English-language pilot episode in conjunction with US television executive Brenda Hampton.

In the last few years several televisions series that began as Israeli programmes have aired around the world to critical success.

Homeland, originally a drama about the return of a missing in action IDF soldier, has won praise and awards for its stars. The Israeli version, Hatufim, is to be shown on British TV next month. In Treatment, another popular drama, was based on the Israeli show BeTipul.

Last month it was announced that actress Julia Stiles would play the lead in a US remake of Pillars of Smoke, a series about a mystery at a secretive commune.
