Israel plans to plough more than £1 billion into a programme to strengthen the identity of diaspora Jews.

The initiative, which will be developed and implemented jointly with local communities, is aimed at Jews between the ages of 12 and 35.

Among the ideas being considered are a world Jewish peace corps; the opportunity to take Hebrew-language courses in state schools in cities with large Jewish populations; the expansion of programmes similar to Birthright for younger age-groups; and increased financial support for Jewish summer camps.

The final recommendations will be ready next month and will be brought for government approval later in the year.
