Hebrew rapper performs at pagoda festival in Burma

A London-born Jewish rapper took to the stage in Burma last week in a celebration of political progress in the south east Asian country.

Samuel Green, who raps under the name of "Antithesis, The Zionist Rapper" performed in both Hebrew and English in front of 10,000 people at a pagoda festival in the town of Sittwe. The 29-year-old, who now lives in Israel but grew up in South London, was the first foreign artist to perform at this event.

Mr Green also visited the synagogue in the town of Yangon and met the head of the local Burma community during his stay.

The show followed by-elections in the strict totalitarian country, in which members of Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy secured seats. One of those elected at the April 1 vote was a rapper.

"It was an incredible gig," he said. "I'm not sure how much they understood of the lyrics but I felt that we really connected. Hip hop is protest music and these people have a lot to talk about."
