Galloway's Respect ousts Labour leader in Bradford

The Respect Party has unseated the Labour leader of Bradford City Council just weeks after George Galloway became Respect MP for Bradford West.

Labour is expected to make gains of some 700 seats across the country following the country’s local elections on Thursday, although counts are ongoing.

But voters rejected the Labour councillors of 17 years, Ian Greenwood, and switched allegiance to Respect, giving the party five seats on the council.

Voters in major British cities also rejected the offer of directly elected mayors, including in Bradford, Manchester and Nottingham. Votes for the Birmingham mayoral decision are still being counted.

The BNP, which fielded 131 candidates for seats across the country, had a “disastrous night”, according to anti-fascist monitor Hope Not Hate, with the party losing the final seat it held on Burnley Council.

"For the first time in ten years there are no BNP councillors on Burnley," said Hope Not Hate. "They have lost councillors, failed to regain seats they won in 2008 and generally their vote is well down on previous elections."

The count for the London mayor and the London Assembly begins later today.
