French National Front 'never' racist, leader says

articlemain

Marine Le Pen, the leader of France’s National Front, said the party has "never been guilty of racism”.

In an interview today on The Andrew Marr Show on the BBC, she defended its opposition to immigration, saying that France was “not going to welcome any more people… we’re full up.”

When she was pressed on the notorious reference of her father and predecessor as party leader, Jean-Marie Le Pen, to the Holocaust as a “detail of history”, she said she disagreed with him on this.

“I said in the clearest way possible that it was not a detail of the Second World War but in fact the symbol of the Second World War,” she said.

She said she did not judge people on the basis of their religion but was in favour of secularism as part of French identity.
