Hundreds of Dutch Jewish children who narrowly survived the Holocaust are to be remembered after a nameless bridge is rededicated in honour of the man who rescued them.

Amsterdam's Bridge 234 will officially become the Pieter Meerburg Bridge on September 2, after the city's mayor marks the name change.

Mr Meerburg was a young student in the city when the Nazis occupied it in 1942, and led a network of student resistance activists who smuggled Jewish children to safety elsewhere in the countries. Some 350 were saved in this way, with female volunteers pretending they wanted to foster their own illegitimate babies.

Mr Meerburg's role was to find children who needed rescuing, and coordinate with the Utrecht Children's Committee, who found them safe houses.

Mr Meerburg, who died two years ago, has previously been named as one of Israeli Holocaust Museum Yad Vashem's Righteous Among the Nations.
