Chelsea Clinton is engaged to her Jewish boyfriend Marc Mezvinsky, a spokesman for former President Bill Clinton has confirmed.

Miss Clinton, 29, the daughter of Bill and Hillary Clinton, the current Secretary of State, is believed to have become engaged on Thanksgiving to Mr Mezvinsky, 31. The couple have been together for two years.

They were introduced through their parents in 1993 at the Renaissance Weekend, an annual event for political and business leaders. Both attended Stanford University. Mr Mezvinsky currently works as an investment banker for Goldman Sachs.

Mr Mezvinsky's parents are Democratic members of Congress, Ed Mezvinsky and Marjorie Margolies -Mezvinsky. His father, like Miss Clinton's, had his political career tainted by scandal. Ed Mezvinsky served a prison sentence for fraud, where he conned investors out of $10m.

Miss Clinton, who is Methodist, recently attended Yom Kippur services with Marc at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, where the couple live.

The couple reportedly sent out an email to a group of friends announcing their engagement. The email read: "We're sorry for the mass email but we wanted to wish everyone a belated Happy Thanksgiving! We also wanted to share that we are engaged!

"We didn't get married this past summer despite the stories to the contrary, but we are looking toward next summer and hope you all will be there to celebrate with us. Happy Holidays! Chelsea & Marc."

Clinton spokesman Matt McKenna said he believed the couple became engaged on Thanksgiving in New York.

Several reports last year said that the couple had got married in a $1m cermony in Martha's Vineyard, but the rumours were quashed by the family.
