A 15-year-old girl has been awarded NIS 13,000 (£2,000) in compensation over being asked to make way for two Charedi men on a bus in the Israeli city of Beit Shemesh.

High school student Ariella Marsden was asked by the driver to move from her seat in the front to the rear of the bus where she was forced to stand for the duration of her journey.

Beit Shemesh Small Claims court ordered the Superbus company to pay the money in what is being seen as a significant move in the battle over women being excluded from travelling on public transport.

Ms Marsden, whose parents Dawn and Julian are originally from London, said the incident had been “very insulting”.
She added: “From now on, I will sit wherever I like without letting anyone interrupt me.”
