The Jewish National Fund in Australia helped break the Guinness World Record this week for the longest braided loaf of bread.

The world record to beat had been 6.09 m (20 feet) and was achieved by Project Inspire in Brooklyn, New York, in October 2015,

But volunteers at Sydney’s Maroubra Synagogue on Thursday smashed the record by successfully baking of a challah that was 10.08m long.

A JNF spokesperson said: “It took 12 hours, using 70 kilos of dough.”

The giant challah was baked using volunteers from students from Emanuel, Moriah, Masada, Kesser Torah and Mount Sinai.

“This project is a way to celebrate Jewish traditions, community and Shabbat,” the spokesperson added.

The challah was baked by a pizza oven with the back and front open. 14 pairs of hands were needed as a human conveyor belt to guide the monster challah through the oven.
