A Labour prospective parliamentary candidate for Swindon North who shared an article about 'Holocaust-mongers' has failed to win a seat on Swindon Borough Council.

Kate Linnegar, who was investigated by Labour after being accused last year of sharing and liking a series of antisemitic social media posts, won 785 votes to the 1,086 secured by Conservative David Ibitoye.

Labour closed an investigation into Ms Linnegar’s social media activity in August 2018 after she denied all responsibility for the posts which had been sent from a "Swindon People’s Assembly" account that used her face as the profile picture.

The account shared posts dating back to 2016, which used phrases like “another Zion slave” and described Zionists as “fake Jews”.

However, Ms Linnegar had shared from her own Facebook account a link to an interview with Norman Finkelstein that referred to “Holocaust-mongers” and another article defending expelled Labour activist Jackie Walker.

Ms Linnegar said in a statement in April that she "wouldn't share those posts today".

"I sincerely apologise for having liked or shared these posts in the past and for the offence this has caused," she said.

She added that she had "developed a deeper understanding about the issue".
