Labour will not debate a rule change on how it punishes antisemitism until next year's party conference.

The Jewish Labour Movement had proposed that Jew-hatred should be upgraded as a disciplinary offence, to the equivalent of showing support for a rival party. However, the party's National Executive Committee has decided the motion "will now be sent to conference this year for delegates to note before it is debated fully next year".

Ella Rose, director of the JLM, described the move as "limited progress", pointing out that party leader Jeremy Corbyn had "appeared to commit" to tabling the rule change at this year's conference in Liverpool. "This seems to be another example of the gap between rhetoric and action on antisemitism," she said.

The NEC also agreed to crack down on social media abuse and immediately to implement the first six recommendations of the Chakrabarti report.

Sunday's JLM rally against antisemitism at the conference is expected to go ahead as planned despite anger from moderates that Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell has been invited to speak.
