Children from Jewish schools have taken to their feet to raise money for development charity Tzedek.

Rather than take the bus or ride in their parents' car, they chose one day to walk from home to lessons as part of the charity's "Shlep to School" campaign.

It is being done in aid of schoolchildren in Ghana, who often have to walk miles to and from school each day in order to get an education.

Year-four pupils from Sacks Morasha Primary in Finchley, who are twinned with a Ghanaian school as part of Tzedek's School for Life project, recently raised more than £2,000 with a three-mile walk to school.

Fellow-shleppers from JCoSS, King Solomon High and Naima JPS have also helped to lift the total to over £6,000 so far.

Ben Salamon, Tzedek's education programme manager said: "We have asked children to ditch their parents' cars and Oyster cards for just one day, shlep to school and raise money to ensure children everywhere have the same opportunities they do."
