Thousands take to streets for Gaza protest

Thousands of anti-Israel protesters marched through London demanding “justice for Gaza” last Saturday.

Organisers claimed as many as 15,000 people had taken part in the rally, which started outside Downing Street and continued to the Israeli Embassy in Kensington.

The crowd held a minute’s silence and released balloons in memory of those killed in Gaza during the conflict — including the Hamas terrorists targeted by Israel.

Speakers included Glyn Secker, the Jews for Justice for Palestinians activist who captained a boat to Gaza during a flotilla campaign in 2010; Labour MPs Jeremy Corbyn and Andy Slaughter; Baroness Tonge; Tony Benn; and the Guardian’s associate editor, Seumas Milne.

The march went ahead despite the ceasefire agreed last week. Activists said that, despite the cessation of violence, they remained opposed to the “siege of Gaza”.

The event was supported by the Unite union, Palestine Solidarity Campaign and Manuel Hassassian, the Palestinian Authority’s UK envoy.
