World Jewish Relief has said its appeal for Syrian refugees is attracting the highest ever average sums given by individual donors.

The appeal, which was launched last month, has so far raised more than £533,000.

The average individual donation is £63, according to WJR Campaigns and communications manager Richard Verber, which, he said, exceeded the average individual donation to its previous four international aid appeals.

He added: "Generally we find that appeals for natural disasters - earthquakes and typhoons for example -raise considerably more than those which are considered man-made disasters such as conflict.

"But our refugee crisis appeal has bucked that trend. The response from the community has been much closer to that of a natural disaster - both in terms of the total amount raised and how quickly people have donated. This is the first time a man-made disaster appeal has behaved this way."

Some of the money has provided more than 2,000 refugee children in Turkey with warm winter clothing and books and equipment they need to attend school.

The Senior project manager for WJR, Josh Simons said: "Turkey has the majority of Syrian refugees and it is where we feel the need is greatest."
