Shimon Peres leads birthday tributes to the Queen as she turns 90

Shimon Peres has told the Queen that “life begins at the age of 90” as Her Majesty celebrates her birthday today.

The 92-year-old former president and prime minister of Israel recorded a video message in honour of the Queen, who became Britain’s longest-reigning monarch last year.

Mr Peres, who was awarded an honorary knighthood by the Queen in 2008, offered her a blessing in the hope that she would “continue to inspire” and to “offer a smile to young and old … in spite of all the problems and wars we are going through.

“You are a great leader for the free world; you are a great hope for the coming generations. God bless you,” he concluded.

To mark the occasion, Jewish photographer Annie Leibovitz took a series of pictures showing the Queen smiling with her family and corgis.

Board of Deputies president Jonathan Arkush joined in with the well-wishers, saying: “It gives me the greatest pleasure to convey the Jewish community’s heartfelt greetings to Her Majesty on the milestone occasion of her 90th birthday.

“She performs her role as Head of State with the utmost grace, dignity and warmth. Long may she reign in good health and strength.”
