Shechita group happy to supply kosher slaughter figures to food watchdog

articlemain

Pro-shechita campaigners have confirmed they will carry on providing the Food Standards Agency with the number of animals slaughtered for kosher meat after the FSA announced it would no longer collect its own figures.

Shechita UK, which defends religious slaughter, said it would continue to help following the agency's decision not to gather the information in its new monthly survey of abattoirs.

Shimon Cohen, spokesman for Shechita UK, said the organisation already kept its own figures and was happy to share them with the FSA.

He told the JC: "We have always provided the data and are ready to continue doing so."

The FSA said it was too difficult for individual abattoirs to keep a tally of how many animals were slaughtered without pre-stunning, the method required by shechita and halal.

It promised it would make a count but had not determined when it would do so.

But the British Veterinary Association, which argues that slaughter without pre-stunning is inhumane, said the FSA should provide regular updates on how many animals were killed.

Sean Wensley, the BVA president, told the Sunday Times that his organisation wanted an “absolute assurance” that the numbers would be made available.

Under EU rules, all animals slaughtered must be pre-stunned, but meat produced as kosher or halal is exempted.
