Scottish councillor accused over 'Nazi salute'

A local councillor who allegedly made a Nazi salute and shouted “sieg heil” at a heated council meeting is to face a disciplinary hearing.

Robert Spears, who sits as part of an independent group on Falkirk council in Scotland, is said to have made the Nazi gesture last May during a debate on the way the council makes decisions.

His group also claimed on Facebook that councillors ran a Nazi regime and that the Coalition government in Whitehall had introduced “Auschwitz-style” reforms for the disabled.

The Commissioner for Ethical Standards in Public Life in Scotland has decided Mr Spears breached the councillors’ code of conduct.

He will face a hearing by the Standards Commission, based at the Scottish Parliament, on Monday, and could be suspended or disqualified from serving on the council.

In 2011 Mr Spears, a former British soldier who fought in the Iraq war, was cleared of acting aggressively towards fellow councillors by the standards commission.
