Relief for Hampstead crêpe stall fans

For more than 30 years, the crêpe stall in Hampstead has been a social landmark for north-west London’s Jewish community.

So reports last week that La Crêperie de Hampstead was finally to close was greeted with disappointment by its many loyal customers.

The stall, which occupies a pavement site on the High Street, had been at risk after a dispute with a nearby pub over shared facilities. The local community had rallied to its aid with a petition signed by over 12,000 people, but seemingly to no avail.

Last weekend, many rushed to savour their last French-style pancake, including One Direction singer Harry Styles, and took to social media to mourn the shutting of the stall.

But it appears all is not lost. The stall’s Jewish owner, Edward de Mesquita, has pledged he will continue to run it from Thursday to Sunday afternoons, struggling on despite having no fridge or supplies stored on site.

“I’m not ecstatic about this,” he said. “It’s going to be very hard but we see how it goes.” He added that the support from locals had made him “emotional”.
