A pro-Palestinian demonstrator has won damages against the police after her arm was broken during protests outside the Israel Embassy in west London three years ago.

High Court judge Mr Justice Eder awarded Kelly Minio-Paluello, 30, £14,303 for the injury sustained in a demonstration by 100-200 people against Israel's Cast Lead operation in Gaza in December 2008.

The judge accepted police accounts that she had tried to prevent the arrest of a fellow-protester, Taimour Lay.

However, he rejected the claim that the force used by police to stop her had been reasonable or proportionate.

According to her barrister, Ms Minio-Paluello suffered continued pain and restricted movement in her left arm and shoulder as a result of the injury.

While the policeman's action had been "dangerous", the judge said, there had been no "deliberate intention" to cause her injury. He rejected a claim for aggravated damages.

Described by the judge as "passionate about the Palestinian cause", Ms Minio-Paluello moved to the UK after graduating in the US and volunteering for humanitarian organisations in the West Band and Gaza in 2003 and 2004.
