Police investigate ‘Heil Hitler’ gas canister attack on strictly Orthodox Jewish shoppers

A group of strictly Orthodox Jews was reportedly attacked on Wednesday night, in what is believed to be an antisemitic incident.

Reports suggested two men and a woman in the Tottenham area of north London were pelted with gas canisters by a gang of three men who shouted: “Hitler is on the way to you. Heil Hitler, Heil Hitler, Heil Hitler.”

The men were driving a pick-up vehicle, according to volunteer Jewish security group Shomrim.

The alleged victims were shopping at the Tottenham Hale retail park – and were believed to have been targeted because of their visibly Jewish dress.

Shomrim volunteer Michael Blayer told the Guardian: “The verbal abuse was disgusting, and small objects were thrown towards the victims, making them fear for their immediate safety.

“Shomrim are supporting the victims. The incident has been reported to the Metropolitan Police, I have absolute confidence in our local police that this will be thoroughly investigated.

“I encourage anyone who witnessed this incident or who may have experienced a similar incident to report it.”

David Lammy, Labour MP for Tottenham, tweeted: "Sickened to hear of vile antisemitic attack in Tottenham yesterday. Police must do all they can to catch perpetrators."

A Met police spokeswoman said: "Police were called on Wednesday at 19:47 hours by a man alleging he was the victim of an antisemitic remark at Tottenham Hale retail park.

"It was alleged that the remark came from occupants in a vehicle at the location. An appointment has been scheduled for the caller to provide a statement."

Officers from Haringey are investigating.
