New street tailor-made for Gerald Cross

A tailor who lived in the East End for more than 40 years is to have a street named after him - in Gloucestershire.

Gerald Cross died in 2008, aged 80, having moved his tailoring business from Stepney to Cirencester in the Cotswolds. Hearing that a new housing development in the town was to have streets named after local businessmen, his son Joel, 39, nominated him.

He said: "My father was a third-generation tailor, and opened a shop in the East End, but later on he moved to Gloucestershire. He set up his womenswear business in the town. It was called Elizabeth and Joel Ltd, after my sister and I, and he was also a local landlord. We've just had confirmation from the local district council that they will name a street after him."

The street will be called Cross Close but the new Kingsmeadow housing development in the town is yet to be built.

Mr Cross, whose father is now buried in Waltham Abbey Jewish Cemetery said: "He wasn't a very religious man, there's no Jewish community here whatsoever as far as I'm aware. Honestly, if he was alive, I think he would have said to me, 'What have you gone and done that for?' He wasn't someone who ever sought fame in any way."
