Nazi enthusiast disbarred after years of Twitter racism

One of the UK’s most notorious tweeters of far-right material has been disbarred as a barrister, after an independent disciplinary tribunal found he had made “seriously offensive” comments.

Ian Millard, who tweets via an account under his own name, had identified himself on social media as a barrister. He was called to the Bar by Lincoln’s Inn in 1991, last holding a practising certificate in 2007.

Examples of racist tweets from the @ianrmillard account include a link in 2013 to a Daily Mail article discussing the dismissal of a libel appeal by Nat Rothschild against the paper, along with the caption: “Reading this account of a Rothschilds jew, the jew Mandelson and others, one can surely only say "Hitler was right".

Millard has posted Nazi propaganda images on a regular basis, along with glowing messages such as “There will never be a speaker such as Adolf Hitler, not in our lifetimes, not ever” in 2015, and a picture of Hitler along with the words “Meine Ehre heisst Treue” – “My honour is loyalty”, which was the motto of the SS.

Jews have not been the only targets; notes from the tribunal observed that in November 2014 Millard tweeted ““Two cab drivers guilty of refusing to pick up blind man and guide dog”. Muslims again. Wake up, UK!”

Later that month he also tweeted “*Black Friday is just that in the UK. 95% blacks and browns, with the odd white chavscum here and there. UK finished?”

Speaking in the wake of the decision, Sara Jagger, the Bar Standard’s Board’s Director of Professional Conduct, said:
“"The use of such offensive language is incompatible with the standards expected of barristers. The Tribunal rightly found that such behaviour diminishes the trust and confidence the public places in the profession and the decision to disbar Mr Millard reflects this."

The Daily Mail reported that Jonathan Goldberg QC had brought the complaint against Millard. After the Standard Board’s decision Mr Goldberg was quoted as saying:

"A man who spews out such Nazi propaganda is not fit to call himself a barrister, so I feel satisfied.

"As a fine judge said recently; if we can't all learn to get along there is no hope for any of us'."

Millard appeared unrepentant in the wake of the decision, subsequently tweeting a picture of a giant hand with a Jewish Star of David holding the strings to a row of newspapers being read by people, along with the caption “Daily Mail carries one-sided piece about me. Unsurprising. Sensationalist newspapers are not in business to inform people properly.”
