Joshua Cramer, a member of the GB basketball team at the Maccabiah Games, is following in the footsteps of his great-grandfather.

Joshua, 18, a pupil at City of London School, scored the winning three points as GB beat Turkey 47-31 — their first opening match victory in 13 years.

Great-grandfather Yosef Steinitz was a gymnast who won gold for Poland in the first Maccabiah Games in 1932 but had to settle for second place to enable the USA to claim a “diplomatic” win.

Steinitz, then 25, met a young volunteer named Deborah at the games, who had come to Israel from Russia in 1920. The couple married and continued to live in Israel.

Yosef brought one of his eight sisters to Israel just before the war. The rest of the family perished in the Holocaust.

At one Maccabiah, Steinitz was given the honour of running with the torch to Jerusalem. He was also a founder member of the Maccabi Jerusalem basketball team. His son, Rony also played for Maccabi Tel Aviv Basketball team.

Josh’s aunt, Sharon Eskenazy, from Mill Hill said: “Josh’s great grandfather would have been very proud to know that his great-grandchild is taking part 81 years on. I’m a very proud aunt.”
