Luciana Berger, the Jewish MP for Liverpool Wavertree, has failed in her attempt to be selected as Labour’s candidate for the upcoming mayoral contest in Liverpool.

Ms Berger came third out of the three candidates, winning 24.7 per cent of the vote.

Steve Rotheram, MP for Liverpool Walton and a close aide of party leader Jeremy Corbyn, won the nomination, collecting 41.6 per of vote, with Joe Anderson, the current mayor, second with 33.7 per cent.

No candidate had a clear majority in the first round of voting, so the vote continued to a second round, with Ms Berger eliminated and the second choice preferences of her voters added to the tallies of her competitors, edging Mr Rotheram over the 50 per cent mark.

Ms Berger tweeted her congratulations to Mr Rotheram. She wrote: "I look forward to campaigning alongside you for a Labour victory in the Liverpool City Region next year".

The victorious MP, a prominent Hillsborough campaigner who is Parliamentary Private Secretary to Mr Corbyn, said he was “deeply honoured and humbled” to be selected.

The vote for mayor of Liverpool City Region, will take place next year.
