Lawyer wins Labour candidacy for Finchley and Golders Green

articlemain

Lawyer Sarah Sackman will be the Labour candidate in the Finchley and Golders Green constituency at the 2015 general election.

Ms Sackman was selected at a party meeting at Finchley Progressive Synagogue on Sunday.

Among the candidates she beat was Alon Or-Bach, who could have become the first Israeli to be a British MP.

Ms Sackman will challenge incumbent Tory MP Mike Freer, who won a 5,809 majority in 2010. The constituency has one of the highest proportions of Jewish residents in the country.

Born in East Finchley, Ms Sackman’s maternal grandparents were from Spain and Gibraltar, where her grandfather served as a minister in the government.

A member of the Jewish Labour Movement, she works in public, planning and environmental law at a London firm, and previously worked at Israel’s Supreme Court in Jerusalem.

Ms Sackman said she was “proud” to have won a “fantastic selection” process and would fight for public services and the NHS.
