Labour peer Lord Bernstein dies

    Labour peer and former chairman of Granada Television, Lord Bernstein, has died aged 74.

    Lord Bernstein, the former Alexander Bernstein, was spearheading a video documentation project of Anglo Jewry alongside the Jerusalem Foundation.

    His father and uncle founded the Granada television company, of which he later became managing director and chairman.

    A former pupil of Stowe School, Lord Bernstein studied at St John’s College, Cambridge.

    He was a major contributor to Lord Levy’s private fund for then Prime Minister Tony Blair’s private office. In 2000 he was made a life peer as Baron Bernstein of Craigweil.

    Lord Bernstein served as Chairman of the Jerusalem Foundation in the UK from 1989 to 1997. He then served as President of the Jerusalem Foundation in the UK until his death.

    He was one of the founders of the Sam Spiegel Film and television School, one of the four leading film schools in the world. he was a consistent supporter of the Jerusalem Cinematheque where he established a museum which was dedicated in memory of his father Cecil.

    Lord Bernstein also contributed to the creation of a community garden in Jerusalem for Jewish and Arab families dedicated in memory of his mother Myra.
