A Jewish man who has been missing from his home for a week is believed to have been found dead, according to the police.

Alexander Singerman, a 32 year-old from Glasgow, was last seen on Wednesday May 10, in the west coast town of Ayr where he worked as an archivist.

Police said the body of a man found in the area this morning was thought to be that of Mr Singerman.

A statement released by Police Scotland said: “Around 11.15 hours today, Wednesday 17 May 2017, the body of a man was found in the area of Auchincruive Estate.

“Formal identification has still to take place, however, police believe the body to be that of Alexander Singerman and his family have been informed.

“A post-mortem examination will be carried out to establish the exact cause of death, however, the death is not being treated as suspicious.”

A video appeal posted by Mr Singerman’s sister, and featuring his parents pleading with him to get in touch, was shared over 1,000 times.

Mr Singerman had been intending to run the Edinburgh Marathon on May 28, and had raised almost £850 for the Scottish Refugee Council.

In a message on his JustGiving page, he wrote: “I'm doing this in memory of my grandmother, Susan Singerman, a Hungarian survivor of Auschwitz who found a home in Scotland after enduring the horror and destruction of the Holocaust.

“I hope that by supporting the Scottish Refugee Council, we can show our solidarity with those seeking to rebuild their lives in safety”.
