Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, has issued his annual Rosh Hashanah message.

Mr Corbyn said he hoped the festival would allow people to remember "our shared values of peace, justice and equality".

His party meets next week for its conference in Brighton.

In his message, Mr Corbyn said: “Shana Tova. As Jewish communities in our country and around the world prepare to celebrate the High Holy Days, I want to extend my warmest greetings.

“This is a time of celebration and new beginnings but also contemplation and reflection on how we have met the challenges in the year that has passed.

“This year, 5778, will present our country with new challenges; but working together, the Jewish community and people of all faiths and none can and will overcome them.

“Labour is the party that was created to challenge inequality and injustice and, in 5778, we will continue with that proud legacy.

“Together, let’s usher in a happy and peaceful new year as we remember our shared values of peace, justice and equality. Shana Tova.”
