A JCoSS pupil, who suffered a cardiac arrest during a school lesson, has regained consciousness after being in an induced coma for two days.

The teenage boy, who is a year 11 student at the north London Jewish school, collapsed during a PE lesson on Friday.

He was reportedly given CPR by a teacher before the arrival of medics and an air ambulance, and then transported to a London hospital.

Doctors placed the boy in a medically-induced coma. He regained consciousness on Sunday and is now undergoing tests in hospital.

JCoSS headteacher Patrick Moriarty explained: “The swift actions of staff and the emergency services kept him alive.”

He added that the school was holding daily tehillim services until he was out of intensive care.

“The Jewish education team will be running tikkun olam projects to raise money for the hospital where he was taken and will also be offering students other concrete and constructive ways to respond to these events,” he said.

The east Barnet school is also offering additional counselling for pupils if requested.

“I know the community will join me in sending our support to our student and his family at this time,” said Mr Moriarty.

“I was particularly impressed by the good sense and calm of our students last Friday and above all by the professionalism and care shown by the staff.

“The JCoSS community is a truly remarkable one and the last few days have fully shown it to be so.’
