Israel ad ban appeal unsuccessful

articlemain

An appeal against a ban on a holiday advert describing the Western Wall as part of Israel has been unsuccessful.

The Israel Government Tourist Office (IGTO) appealed after the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) upheld a complaint in April that the Kotel was actually in the Occupied Territories.

An image on the advert for holidays in Israel showed a picture of the wall with the gold Dome of the Rock in the background, captioned "Jerusalem". A spokesman from the ASA said: "After careful consideration, including of a report from the Independent Reviewer, the ASA Council has decided not to overturn its original upheld decision. The original adjudication will remain unchanged."

But Jon Benjamin, chief executive of the Board of Deputies, said: "We remain of the view that this is a bad decision, and one prompted by the political bias of the claimant and a degree of naivety on the part of the ASA."
