'Honour' tie to Hamas

articlemain

The controversial Palestinian academic, Azzam Tamimi, this week reiterated his commitment to Hamas in an address at London University's Queen Mary College.

Speaking at an event entitled One State or Two State Solution, under the auspices of QMC's Palestine Solidarity Society, Dr Tamimi told Israel's Ha'aretz newspaper that he had legitimate political views which opponents wished to silence.

One pro-israel activist, Rich Millett, was denied entry to the event, which attracted about 30 people.

Dr Tamimi reportedly repeated his often stated desire to become a martyr for the Palestinian people, and declared that for him it was "an honour" to be close to Hamas. He regretted the fact, he said, that he did not have an official leadership role within the organisation.

Despite complaints from Jewish groups about Dr Tamimi, the event went off relatively quietly.
