Fire damages London kosher supermarket

Popular kosher supermarket ravaged by fire

articlemain

One of London's most popular kosher supermarkets was ravaged by a fire last Thursday.

More than 50 fire-fighters in ten fire engines tackled the blaze at Kosher Kingdom's warehouse at Russell Parade on Golders Green Road, which started at around 4pm. It took almost five hours to put out. One person suffering from smoke inhalation was led to safety. The fire brigade said there were no casualties.

The fire damaged a major section of Kosher Kingdom's warehouse, which was used for storage and contained mainly food. Part of the adjacent office was also damaged. Part of Golders Green Road was cordoned off, leaving traffic chaos in the area, which was already affected by temporary traffic lights. All shop owners and residents were told to leave the area.

Joseph Haziza, manager at the neighbouring Menachem Butchers, said: "It did affect our business. Thursday is our busiest day of the week but we had to turn orders away and people couldn't come in to pick them up. It was quite upsetting but we couldn't do anything. Thank God it didn't reach us and no-one was hurt."

Clouds of white smoke were still visible hours after the fire had been put out. Fire investigators are still investigating the cause.
