A couple has launched a legal challenge against the ban on heterosexual civil partnerships.

Rebecca Steinfeld and Charles Kaeidan reject traditional marriage on the grounds it is sexist and want to register their union in a civil ceremony.

The couple launched a judicial review after trying to hold a ceremony at Chelsea Town Hall, where they were turned away because the Civil Partnership Act only applies to same-sex
couples.

Ms Steinfeld said: "We see ourselves as partners and we are seeking a social institution that will express how we see each other. There are still sexist trappings to weddings: there's only space for the father to sign on the registry form."

Their solicitor has notified the council and Culture Secretary Sajid Javid of the couple's intention, and called on the government to change the law. Mr Keidan said: "We are hugely grateful for the support we've received from so many Jewish friends and colleagues."

The couple announced their engagement in a specially created "civil partnerships" section in the JC's social pages last year.
