Hasmonean High School has written to all parents to ease fears over a former teacher who raped a teenage girl in Sussex eight months after he had stopped working at the school.
IT teacher Subir Chakravarty was jailed for 10 years in September at Hove Crown Court after being convicted of raping a 14 -year-old girl in Eastbourne on March 28 2014.
Mr Chakravarty, who taught at Hasmonean, in Hendon, north-west London, for 19 months, left the school in August 2013.
In his email to parents, headteacher Andrew McClusky, said: “I am writing to you regarding a former member of staff at Hasmonean High School, Subir Chakravarty. This teacher taught at Hasmonean between January 2012 and August 2013. It has recently come to light that in September 2016 the press reported that he had been convicted and imprisoned for a serious sexual offence against a 14-year-old girl in Eastbourne in March 2014. It is important to note that the offence took place after the teacher had left Hasmonean.”
The school also reassured parents, that there were “no child protection concerns about this teacher while he taught at the school.”
Any parents still concerned about the convicted teacher’s time at the school were urged to contact child protection staff at the school or to speak to Barnet Council’s Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub.
Mr Chakravarty was an IT teacher at Ratton School in Eastbourne when he befriended the teenage girl before twice raping her at the address where he used to live.
He was sent to prison on September 5 2016 following a five-day trial.
The teacher had resigned from Ratton School before the incident happened. By the time the offence was first reported, he had taken up a teaching post at a school in East London. However he was dismissed when the matter became known.
In a statement to the JC, Mr McClusky said: “We have recently become aware of the conviction earlier this year of a former teacher for a sexual offence which took place in another part of the country. The teacher worked at the school between January 2012 and August 2013 and this offence took place after the teacher had left the school.
“I have written to all of our parents to inform them of this and have asked that they contact the school should they have any concerns or questions.”
