Labour candidate Tulip Siddiq has won the constituency of Hampstead and Kilburn, holding it for the party following the retirement of Oscar-winning actress Glenda Jackson.

Ms Siddiq recorded a majority of 1,138 – the seat had previously been the second tightest in the country after Ms Jackson won by just 42 votes five years ago.

Jewish Conservative candidate Simon Marcus finished second, with 22,839 votes to Ms Siddiq’s 23,977.

Maajid Nawaz, a former Hizb ut-Tahrir member turned anti-extremism campaigner stood for the Liberal Democrats and finished third with 3,039.

Ms Siddiq, who grew up in Bangladesh - where her grandfather was the country's first president - said during her campaign that suspicions over her relationship with the Jewish community following her selection had dissipated after she reiterated her determination to represent minority groups.

She spoke at last December's Limmud conference and at synagogues across the constituency.

In her victory speech in the early hours of Friday morning, Ms Siddiq thanked her supporters for their work and said: “This is the constituency where I grew up and went to school. Hampstead and Kilburn is my home which is why I’m proud to represent it.

“By voting for me you have shown you have put faith in Labour values.”

Mr Marcus acknowledged the strength of the “ground operation” run by Labour.
