Election 2015: Mike Freer romps home in Finchley and Golders Green

articlemain

Conservative Mike Freer has held his seat in the constituency with the largest number of Jewish voters.

Mr Freer was re-elected as MP in Finchley and Golders Green, winning with a majority of 5,662, a small drop from his 2010 result.

He collected 25,835 votes against Labour candidate Sarah Sackman’s 20,173.

Ms Sackman had run a determined campaign and at one stage polls had put her slightly ahead of Mr Freer.

But the result was a vindication of his belief that he had delivered on his promises during his first term in Parliament.

Ukip took third place, with candidate Richard King collecting 1,732 votes. Jewish Liberal Democrat Jonathan Davies was fourth with 1,662 and Green candidate Adele Ward fifth with 1,357.

Mr Freer said he was “humbled and proud” to continue serving the community. “We can work hard and get things done,” he said after the result was announced.

Ms Sackman said it had been a “privilege” to contest the seat.

The Labour campaign had grown in the weeks leading up to the election, with many observers believing Ms Sackman may overturn Mr Freer’s mid-range majority.

But in the end he finished only around 150 votes worse off than five years ago.
